Glaze Tests

Updated: May 6

E/W white and gloss layered over oxides

  1. Red Iron Oxide

  2. Manganese Oxide

  3. Copper Carbonate

  4. Iron Oxide Yellow Ochre

  5. Chromium Oxide

  6. Cobalt Carbonate

  7. Copper Oxide

  8. Iron Oxide Number 3, 5, 6 and 7 are the most successful as they are the most reactive with the white glaze and offer a richer colour.

  7. Copper Oxide Taking the tiles to stoneware offered better results. Number 3,5,6 and 7, again offering the richest colours. The Cobalt is my personal favourite as it transitions from clear to white glaze.

STW Barium Blue. Mat velvet finish that responds well to texture. Very rich colours.

Barium blue with Chromium oxide applied over the top. Chrome brought a turquoise wash of colour to the glaze.

STW Blue. The surface is a little washy, maybe better sprayed rather than dipped.

STW Green Gloss Speckled Green. Nice semi matt finish but did travel.

STW Barium Red. A bit bland, maybe better as a reduction glaze.

STW. No idea what the recipe is but wanted to try to anyway as it's tonality looked like it would respond well to texture. Applied the cobalt and chromium under the glaze. Cobalt brough out the green and chromium the purple.

STW Satin Gloss Red Mottled. Awful result, more poo brown than red mottled. The edge around the lid is clumsy.

Barium Blood Red: reduction.

Worked well picking up a very subtle surface texture (laser cut portraites). Lovely, cool colours.

Test tiles: 1: Christmas Red Thick, 2: Christmas Red Thin, 3: Rosso Red (glaze), 4: Bright Red Thick, 5: Bright Red Thin, 6: Crimson Thick, 7: Crimson Thin, 8&9: Rosso rubbed away (different thicknesses of surfaces), 10: Clear Glaze. Clear glazed: P2837 applied to all except 3, 8 & 9. Wanted to explore the best way to pick up the texture. Finally opted for 2, as it most closly resembled the other aspects of the piece and captured the details successfully.
